January 24, 2007 Statement from HIGPA on President Bush's State The Health Industry Group Purchasing Association (HIGPA) applauds President Bush's goal of making "private health insurance more available and affordable" as he discussed last night in his annual State of the Union address. "We agree that to make health care more affordable spending should be reduced and believe that one good solution is to affirm the role health care group purchasing organizations (GPOs) play in helping hospitals and other health care providers in saving the nation billions of dollars a year in health care costs," said Curtis Rooney, HIGPA President. GPOs allow hospitals to increase the purchasing clout of health care providers and increase their economic efficiency by purchasing medical devices, pharmaceuticals and other products at significantly discounted prices. As a result GPOs play an important role in reducing health care costs while promoting quality improvement. "We look forward to working with Congress and the Administration in strengthening the role of GPOs as we go forward," said Rooney. The Health Industry Group Purchasing Association (HIGPA) is a broad-based trade association that represents 31 purchasing organizations. HIGPA 's group purchasing industry members include for-profit and not-for-profit corporations, purchasing groups, associations, multi-hospital systems and health care provider alliances. |
